Better way to prevent username enumeration?

I have always used CAPTCHAs to prevent user name enumeration on things like the user registration pages, but these are always kind of annoying and they can really take away from the look and feel of a page.

Are there any good alternatives to CAPTCHA for preventing username enumeration? I'm looking for something that is invisible to the user (aka - not looking for word game alternatives to CAPTCHA).
