Is it possible to use default android encryption techniques at app level

As announced by Google recently that in Android L encryption would be turned on by default at the first boot.

This may be silly to ask but my question is can such encryption techniques be used in app level. Lets say for encrypting the database file or any other in a app.

There are different 3rd party libraries for encrypting .db files, but still is there any such default encryption technique that we can use at app level rather than 3rd party libraries.
