Good way to secure SSH keys

I am looking into good ways to secure SSH keys. Any suggestions? The SSH boxes that I would like to secure would be in the cloud and it is important to use SSH keys since they need to be forwarded (that is a requirement)

and some other smart card mechanisms so far, but I am still look out for better solutions.
