/etc/ssl/certs why so many?

I have a default debian installation and there are like 500+ certs in my /etc/ssl/certs.

Why are they there? is it for browser ssl connection? so that browser does not show that warning message when logging into the machine?

Who authenticates these certs in the default debian repository? does the repository managers verify these certs?
