How to test if a Programm is safe

I created a Java Programm which communicates over sockets with an Android-App. Now I want to check wether it is secure. As I´m new to security testing, I want to know how I act in this case and perhaps tipps what I have to look for while programming. I´d be happy if you´d provide further sources I could find informations on this.
