Let us say that someone createda a fake gmail account. They then proceeded to send some emails to a school. (The school uses gmail for education). They want to track down the person who sent it because that person slandered some other students and it's a huge violation of the code of conduct. This person most likely used the school's WiFi (which is secured).
Can the person be tracked down if someone has the header and original email that was sent? I thought that surely someone can be tracked down by their IP address because every computer has a different IP address. But even if the school contacts Google, the IP address that Google sees is probably just one of the few IP addresses that the school uses.
If this person did not use a proxy, then the school can work with the internet provider and figure out the IP address of the sender and crossmatch it with any of the regular emails that were sent through the school's Wifi to figure out who it was, right?
