Understanding and trying out buffer overflow attacks

I came to read this article (It's a bit old) demonstrating stack based buffer overflow attack in an unpatched version of Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Later versions of Windows are reasonably secure to stack based buffer overflow attacks).

  1. I'm looking for similar resources to explore buffer over flow attacks (not just limited to stack based attacks) for both Windows and Linux environment.

  2. The resources should be just not plain theory, but detailed demonstration with reference to the tools and code snippets require.

  3. It will be much appreciated, if someone can briefly write about attacks and useful tools as an answer here itself.
