Default Encryption - A Panacea or Placebo

My first question is:

Is it accurate to say that default decryption is a placebo? Will default decryption only make end-users think they are secure instead of actually making them more secure?

My second question has to do with cracking the encryption:

Isn't it true that all encryption can be cracked, and with this in mind, how difficult would it be for the FBI to crack Apple's encryption algorithms for iPhones?
