Why do PGP Keys have expiration dates?

I read a tutorial to get started with PGP and so far I understand the importance and the difference between encryption, decryption, signing, and verifying.

However, I don't understand why a key has an expiration date? And what happens if the key expires? Should I set a new expiration date for the same key or should I replace the old key with a new one?
